Compassion?

by Dwayne Conyers

(Matthew 25:40)

Standing on the corner
under pale moonlight
the working woman stands there...
sordid merchandise
Just an hour later
in the shadows dark
another pint of vodka
numbs her wounded heart

Why can’t you see her?
How can you pass her by?
Where is your compassion?
Why can’t you hear her cry?

Walking through the front door
of a Sunday church
The working woman comes in...
wants to stop the hurt
Laying on the sidewalk
(ushers threw her out)
“How dare you show your face here?”
their offended shout

How could this happen?
Why did compassion die?
Where’s the love of Jesus?
Why the urge to crucify?

His great commission
To heal, forgive and love
Church should be a clinic
Not someone’s social club

Standing on the corner,
merchandise to sell
the working woman stands there...
on her way to hell
What a sad occurrence,
What a tragedy...
Just ask yourself this question:
What if it was me?

Why can’t you see her?
How can you pass her by?
Where is your compassion?
Why can’t you hear her cry?

How could this happen?
How could it go this way?
What would you do if God
treated you the same way?
