Scripture Text
Luke 7:11-23
emphasis v.21-22

In 1998, we’ve had a year-long study on healing. We read about the boy who was born blind. Jesus healed him as he washed in the pool of Siloam. This church should be a place of healing among the people of God. There are some hinderances to healing.

  1. Sin hinders God’s healing power
  2. A negative tongue hinders God’s healing power
  3. Unbelief and faithlessness hinders God’s miraculous healing power

We spent seven months examining the healing ministry of Jesus. If we are His children, created in His image, then we should be like our Daddy. It is a discomfitting thing to have a child that doesn’t look like you. As believers, we should look like our Heavenly Father. That includes His ministry of healing. We should be instruments of God.

  • The depressed should find hope
  • The lost should find salvation
  • The infirmed should find health
  • The demon possessed should find freedom in Jesus’ name
  • The spiritually dead should find new life (2nd Corinthians 5:17)

Our family should be different because of our encounter with Jesus Christ. Our job should be different because of our encounter with Jesus Christ. Our community should be different because of our encounter with Jesus Christ.

News about Jesus was spreading far and wide. When fame and popularity comes, controversy also comes. Some loved Jesus and some hated Him enough to kill Him. Some believed, and some remained unconvinced of His connection with God. Even in 1998, some don’t know Who Jesus is. Some think that Jesus was:

  • A revolutionary
  • A martyr
  • A prophet
  • A philosopher
  • A fool
  • A phony

However, I KNOW that Jesus is:

  • Savior of the world
  • The Son of God
  • Head of the church
  • Lilly of the valley
  • Bright and Morning Star
  • Bread when I’m hungry
  • Water when I’m thirsty
  • Company keeper in the lonely hours
  • Strength in times of weakness
  • Light that guides me along the way

Don’t you know Who Jesus is? Even in the mind of John the Baptist, there was some controversy regarding Jesus.

Luke 1:18

John sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus "Are You the one to come, or should we look for another?" Because John was in prison and about to die, and he didn’t see Jesus for a long time, he was isolated and ignorant about what was going on. He needed some proof. This is ironic, because if anybody knew that Jesus was real, it should have been John. He was a holy man who baptized Jesus and called Him the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. Still, John had some questions, so his disciples went to Jesus and asked, "Are You the one to come, or should we look for another?"

It’s alright to question God. As kids, we were told the opposite. However, Job questioned God and asked "Why me?" The psalmist questioned God and asked how long before sinners are dealt with. Even Jesus questioned God. On the cross, He asked, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" There are times in your life when you will have to ask God some questions. You need to get down on your knees and ask God why... how long... what must I do... where were You when I needed You?

Luke 1:21

Jesus told John’s disciples to look at the demons coming out... look at sickness being healed. Jesus showed them that He was real. It wasn’t footnotes or bibliographies.

  • Jesus told the lame man get up
  • Jesus told the leper clean up
  • Jesus told the blind man look up
  • Jesus told the deaf man listen up
  • Jesus told the dumb man speak up
  • Jesus told the dead man rise up

Siloam is the main line church where Christ is the main attraction. We are God’s house of healing and wholeness. Still, those are just words. Are there some works behind those words? Are people being healed? Are people being saved? Are families being restored? Are the hungry being fed?

It isn’t what we say. The proof of our calling is in what we do. If we are what we say we are, something should change in someone else’s life since Jesus is in the life changing business. We should be in the same business.

The reason young men don’t come to church is that they don’t see a difference in our lives. They see us sad, fussing, cussing and drinking. They see us in our expensive suits on Sunday morning and they wonder what’s the use? They don’t want that kind of Christianity.

It is not what we say, it is what we do. If you are a preacher, somebody should get saved from your sermons at least once in a while. We should be praying in faith. People should feel better when you pray for them.

If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? Would your life and works speak to it? Did people see you on your knees praying? Did you pray for the sick? Did they get healed as a result of your praying?

May the works I’ve done speak for me.

Do I love the unlovely, pray for those who despitefully use me? Do I stand tall on the word of God?

May the works I’ve done speak for me.
